Subhendu Chatterjee: Remembering the great actor

Subhendu Chatterjee: A Tribute

I started writing a small article about tollywood bengali nayaks just few weeks back. If you search our blog by “Thinking Beyond Uttam Kumar” you will find my old posts. I never thought that I have to write this article so early to pay my tribute to Subhendu Chatterjee. Subhendu Chatterjee passed way on last Thursday after suffering for some time. He was 71 years old. Subhendu is one of my favorite actors in the Bengali Film industry. Tall, slim, gentle and shy looking, handsome, Subhendu had his degree as a doctor.  He worked on various bengali films and with various directors such as Mrinal Sen, Satyajeet Roy, Buddhadev Dasgupta, Gautam Ghosh etc. His performance in “Chhadmabeshi” is simply superb and in no way less noticable than supreme presence of Uttam Kumar. He worked with the beautiful actresses of his time such as Lili Chakrabarty, Aparna Sen etc. He was a very versatile actor who did all different kinds of roles from the golden time heroes, supporting actors, fathers, journalists, and many more. I personally love his performance the most in “Bhanu Goyenda Jahar Assistant” where he showed his talents in comedy too. In  “Dahan” he was remarkable as a father of a daughter (Romita played by Rituparna Sengupta) in upper middle class Kolkata society who suffers the social and mental trauma and agony of a daughter who gets raped. Saswata Chatterjee, son of Subhendu Chatterjee, is one of the leading actors in Kolkata today while Shubhendu’d other son is lives in America. Kolkata, West Bengal and Tollywood are mounrning in this huge loss of Subhendu.

If you love Subhendu Chatterjee, please reply to this article and share your thoughts.

Subhendu Chatterjee is one of the best actors of the Golden era of bengali cinema. He had acted with Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee and other stalwarts of his time. But he made the viewers think about him still.

Yes he was truly a passionate actor!

I always wanted to see him more in the role of the suave and charming hero for I thought him no less than any of his contemporaries (with the exception of Uttam Kumar) who commanded greater attention as leading men.
