Now! I am sure you have used METRO many times in your life. In Calcutta and in other cities too. Few weeks back I read a news about hawkers selling various stuffs in Kolkata metro! Surprisingly people were stunned! No one notice hawkers in our everyday life but it was so important that it was a “news” and published in front pages of many newspapers! Well, there are more. Problems with late Metro Rails, misbehavior from metro rail office persons, no more clean platforms, suicide attempts, Metro Rail break down….hmm quite a long list!

So, the question is why Metro rail losing it’s fame? Or what can we do to improve the situation of Metro in Kolkata? Should we raise the ticket price even more? Employ more people to work for Kolkata Metro? Aware people more about cleanliness in Stations?

Fortunately I have the experience of travelling at both Washington’s Metro and Kolkata Metro.
Believe it both are same. Kolkata Metro system is better than NY Metro. But ofcourse, not in length. And timing is superb.

Waw…good to know that our Kolkata Metro system is doing better than Metro system in USA. I used to take metro in Atlanta (its called MARTA) for two years. It was just same as Calcutta Metro too.

kolkata metro is still the best way to trael in kolkata, but is degrading. the AC has stopped functioning, so stations now have few big stand-fans to cater the public (very insufficient and inefficient by the way). The station announcing system also malfunctions.

I travelled the new new-delhi metro last year. the trains & stations were pretty new. but degradaton started there too – broken window glasses, malfunctioning station name display (within train)…

my experiences of the metro are good, it is fast way to travel from south to north. however expansions plans are taking too long.

Tollygunge – Garia Expansion project is one of the most poorly managed projects of India. Project of this magnitude should not have taken more than 36 months considering all constraints. There appears to be no planning for the project. Kolkata Metro is all set to open the Tollygunge – Garia (Up to Garia Bazar ) section very shortly. But the infrastructures around the New Metro Stations are not ready to handle sudden increse in movements of traffic once the project is commissioned. The Kolkata Metro must work together with KMDA & other state government bodies to develope the station areas, keeping provisions for Bus Stand , Auto Rickshaw stand, pedestrian walkway etc.All the elevated stations should be provided with adequate numbers of Escalators to access the platforms. The Kolkata Metro Railway also must erect sound barriers along its elevated track wherever it passes through densely populated areas to reduce noise level.

The newly established metro service from Garia to Dumdum has been a blessing for thousands of commuters in Kolkata. But this is to bring to your urgent notice, that it has created unprecedented menace for the rest of the passengers boarding train at the Kalighat Junction

Today is 24th of August . 2009 and like every other day I was to board the train from Kalighat. But due to the extension of the rail service, the coaches were already over crowded with no space for me and many other helpless office goers to board the train comfortably.

A development is good only when it brings in some fruitful results. But to my utter disappointment , this one has brought along tremendous problems. Can you give us a remedy , an option of traveling in the metro properly….What steps will you guys take to ensure that the metro facility is availed in a streamline manner , or would this new development take Millions of Kolkatans far away from civilization.

Hi There..Greetings from Mumbai! Well, Every time I visit Kolkata or stay there on professional assignments – I make it point to use Kolkata Metro for almost 80% of my Total Travel in Kolkata City.

I find Kolkata Metro great, very time efficient, clean and frequency too is superb.

Having said that, there is room for improvements. Well, the public announcement systems inside and outside Metro has to be upgraded and are to modeled on lines of Delhi Metro.

Stations are to kept slightly more clean and Police Posted there have to slighlty more hospitable and concerned about not only the security but human queries, in case some one is unable to find way outside. Announcement should be made at platforms about land marks on both sides of the exit points e.g If you have to get towards Haldiram Side take the Left side of Esplanade etc…

Hope You understand..what my suggestions are.

Anyways – As a commuter – Kolkata Metro is overall a good and positive experience for me and my family.

Best Wishes nd Cheers to all of you running the show.

    God Bless
