Atulprasad Sen and His Songs
Atulprasad sen was born in 29th October, 1871 in Dhaka. He was a contemporary musician to Rajanikanta and equally known for his Light Classical Bengali Music. He was also a singer, lyricist and composer. He lost his father at an tender age and brought up at the place of his grand father who had great admire for devotional songs. Kalinarayan Gupta, his grandfather, was also a follower of “Bhagavada”. It was no surprise that Atulprasad Sen piced up his musical qualities from his grand father.
Atulprasad Sen was one of the pioneer person to set up Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sanmelan. He was the editor of “Uttara” – the magazine of Banga Sahitya Sanmelan. He was a very king person and spent most of his earnings for the welfare of poor local people. He also donated the rights to his property and copyright of his works and songs to welfare-oriented organixations. His songs were also revolved around love, devotion and patriotish. He was among few people beside Rajanikanta who managed to create his own identity as a poet. During his time most of the contemporary poets were greatly influenced by Rabindranath Tagore. His songs are so unique that they are famous as “Atulpradasi” or “Atulprasader Gaan”. He wrote more than 200 unique songs. However only about 50 of them are still sund at present time. We should pay more attention to all of his songs and make every effort to keep them alive.
71 songs of Atulprasad was edited and published in Kakali by his cousin Sahana Devi. His other songs were published two other books called “Gitipunja” and “Koyekti Gaan”. His songs were first recorded in Calcutta during early ninties. Sahana Devi and Haren Chatterjee were some of the earliest singers to sung his songs in record format. However, their rendition of the songs were different.
Atulprasad is known for introducing Thumri in Bengali Music. As he lived a great amount of time in Lucknow, he was aware of Thunmri Style, originally created by noted musician, Nawab Wajed Ali Shah of Lucknow. He incorporated Thumri in Bengali Songs in a marvelous way retaining their tune and style but blending with the theme of bengalli perspective. He typically used Dadra, Kheyal, Thumri in many songs that are fast in pace.
Some of his famous Bengali Thumri are:
- ki ar chahiba balo
- ogo nithur daradi
- yaba na yaba na ghare
Some of his popular Light Classical Bengali Songs are:
- bandhu dhar dhar mala
- tabu tomay daki bare bare
His incorporation of light classical songs was very unique and even influenced Kazi Nazrul Islam. His another achievement was his compositions based on Kirtan tunes. Some examples are “Jani Jani He Ranga Rani“. He was very fong of raga “Khambaj” and often used Khambaz in is songs. He also composed songs based on ragas like natamallar, nayaki kanada, kafi, pilu etc. Some of his extremely famous partiotic songs are “How Dharmete Dhir, How Karmete Bir”, “Utho Go Bharat Lakshmi” etc. He was very much infuenced by Baul and Bhatiyali songs of bengal. He was very fond of bengali language too and his immortal creation “Moder Gorob Moder Asha, Amader Ei Bangla Bhasa” is extremely famous in Bengal.
He died in Lucknow on 26 August 1934.

Thank you for your note on Atul Prasad; he was my grand uncle (my mother’s uncle). We grew up in a non-bengali speaking environment, but as a child, I remember well my mother used to sing me his songs. Though I do not understand much Bengali, the beauty of the language and his songs is moving, even to one such as myself. Here is a site where you can listen to him (in person) singing “Miche Tui Bhabish Mon”: http://www.raaga.com/channels/bengali/moviedetail.asp?mid=B0000043. He had a lovely voice. Some of his songs are also available on the Rhapsody website which has two albums of Banani Ghosh singing his songs: “3 Facets” & “Memories of the Maestros” . It would be wonderful to have the lyrics of his songs in translation (especially Miche Tui….”!!
