Bengali Light Classical Songs
Ragashroyi Bangla gaan are songs based on some form of Raga. They are known as Light Classical Bengali Songs. Atul Prasad, Kazi Nazrul, Rabindranath Tagore did various experimentation in making such songs. In earlier Bengali movies we see a great use of Light Classical Bengali Music. They were best suited for the movies as the songs are not long as the usual duration of “Raga” still they make us the classical base and produce a shorter version of the Raga using words appropriate for the movie. Light Classical Bengali music also acts as a bridge between the Pure Classical Music and Modern Bengali Songs. Pure Classical songs are sometimes hard to grasp for many people including me. Light classical songs offer the enjoyment of the raga in a more understandable way for the larger mass of people.
