Pankaj Mullick - The Legend

Pankaj Mullick, born on 20th April 1904 at Calcutta, India, was the son of Manimohan Mullick. His father had a keen interest in traditional bengali music and used to invite eminent musicians and singser during various festivals. Pankaj Mullick become a student of Durgadas Banerjee after completion of his college and later he came to Dinendra Nath tagore to learn music.Videophone company released his first music album in 1926. Pankaj Mullick is probably the only person who tuned a “Rabindra Poem” and made it “Rabindra Sangeet“. “Diner Sheshe Ghumer Beahe” was his own tune approved by Rabindranath Tagore! Pankaj Mullick had a very close association with All India Radio (AIR) from the very beginning of radio broadcasting in 1928. He also popularized the use od Tabla in Rabindra Sangeet while Rabindranath Tagore himself never liked association of instruments in his songs. He was not mainly an actor, however he appeared in small roles in various films. His first appearence was in the movie “Chashar Meye“. R. C. Boral, a very famous and legendary name in Bengali Movie industry in early 90s used Pankaj Mullick to compose background music for many of his silent films. Pankaj Mullick use to perform with Orchestra to provide background music. Later, during the time of Bengali Talkies, Pankaj Mullick was also kept working as a composer and music director. He even acted in the film “Mukti” in early age of Bengali Cinema. Pankaj Mullick joined the famous “New Theater” in 1933 and then composed numerous films by R.C.Boral such as Chaon (1935), Karorpati and Manzil (1936) and President (1937) etc.

His Bengali films include Mukti (1937), Desher Mati (1938), Badididi (1939), Jiban Maran (1939), Nartaki (1940), Daktar (1940), Meenakshi (1942), Dikshul (1943), Dui Purush (1945), Nurse Sisi (1947), Ramer Sumati (1947), Pratibad (1948), Roop Katha (1950), Nabin Yatra (1953), Mahaprasthaner Pathey (1953), Rajkamal (1955), Louha-Kapat (1957), Aahwan (1961) and Bighalita Karuna Jahabi Jamuna (1972).

Pankaj Mullick was also a writer and write many books including Geet Valmiki, Swara Lipika, Raga Lakshana Geet Manjari and Mahishasura Mardina. He was awarded “Dada Saheb Phalke Award” in 1972.
