Bappi Ladiri – Bengali Hits

Bappi Lahiri is a music director and singer. He was born in 27th November, 1953. He is considered to be the pioneer of “Disco” trend in Bollywood music. He became extremely popular after the success of films like “Disco Dancer“, “Namak Halaal”, “Sharabi” etc. He is entirely famous for his eye-glasses and jewellery and always found wearing differnt types of ornaments. Bappi Lahari was born in a music rich family in Calcutta. His father Aparesh Lahidi was a musician and singer. Bappi Lahiri started learning Tabla at a tender age of three. He always wanted to be internationally recognized and famous. He started his careed as a music director with the bengali film “Daadu” released in 1972 when he was only 19 years old. He then moved to Bollywood and did music direction in the film ” Nanha Shikari” which was released in 1973. “Zakhmi (1975)” however was a turnover movie for him where he also sung as playback singer. Bappi Lahiri used Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle most of the time as they were the best rendering Disco type songs. He also used Alisha Chinoy and Usha Utthup for his creations. He won the “Best Music Director” award in Filmfare for the film Sharabi in 1985. He has so far done music direction on over 400 cinemas!

Bappi Lahiri is also famous for plagiarism in Hindi music. Many of his songs are known copies of popular western hits. Some examples are:

  • Jeena Bhi Kya Hai Jeena (movie: Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki) – Original Billy Jean
  • Tera Mera Pehla Yaranaa (movie: Shart) – Original Karma Chameleon by Culture Club
  • Koe Yanha Aha Nache Nache – Original Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles
  • Hari Om hari (Movie: Pyar Dushman) – Original One Way Ticket by Eruptian
  • Zubi Zuni (Movie: Dance Dance) – Original Brother Louie by Modern Talking

Bappi Lahidi vanished from the music industry in 1990s. He was back in the superhit movie “Dalaal” starring Mithun Chakrabarty and had another famous song “Gutur Gutur”. Then in 2004 he launched his first music album ” Bappi Magic – The Asli Baap Mix” featuring popular hits such as “Gori Hai Kalaiyan”, “Jimmy Jimmy” and more. It was a great hit. In 2005 he did the music direction for the famous movie “Maine Gandi Ko Nehi Mara” and thereby made a new position in music industry. Lately he is back into news once again. He is seen every where. He is the judge of the Zee’s popular program “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”, he lent his voice in the title songs of Mani Ratmans film “Guru”, he is also judge at the “K for Kishore” reality show by SONY, He recently directed music for Bhoothnath and Sarkar Raj. He has many more films in his had to work on. We are expecting more from Bappi Magic in recent future.

    bappida i am ur blind fan since childhood. almost all of ur songs including all sang by u are in my collection. but i am madly looking for a partikular song that i listened once in my lifetime when i was 4 years old ,so i do not remamber the full lyrics of that bengali songs and the name of the albums . its somthink like mayur akash, mutho mutho tara ,duto choke dai je pahara. jhora patar awaz krishnachura. if anyone have this song please poat this and mail me at my given email id .iam desparately looking for this song . plz help me and if bappida himself see this request plz post the song .Arnab Banerjee
