Bhoomi – The Bangla Band
Bhoomi was formed in 1999, with the aim of reviving the folk music of Bengal and making it popular amongst all sections of the society by providing it an urban touch. The band was initially created out of the interest of the two founding members – Surojit Chatterjee and Soumitra Roy – to experiment with the vast store of traditional (and in many cases non-attributed) Bengali Folk music ( “procholito gaan”) and mix it with their repertoire of Western music and instrumentation.

Surojit Chatterjee and Soumitro Ray’s meeting and their experimentation with folk resulted in the formation of the band with the name Bhoomi – meaning Earth – which gelled in, in spirit and essence with their earthly and folksy style – along with the other members. Their current line-up includes 6 band members -

- Sanjoy Mukherjee – Percussion & effects
- Hemanto Goswami – Electric guitar
- Abhijit Ghosh – Bass guitar

- The group’s popularity has cut across all barriers and the sale of its debut album JATRA SHURU is saluted AS THE LARGEST SELLING ALBUM in the regional category by Times Music.
- Bhoomi has been credited by the media as the group responsible for reviving folk music in Bengal.
- Bangla Sangeet Prachar Samity has awarded Bhoomi as the BEST BANGLA BAND consecutively for two years.
- Bhoomi has also been awarded with the Smt. Bijoya Chakraborty Smrity Purashkar for adding a new dimension of modern Bengali music at the International Festival of Alternative and Contempory Expressions 2002.
- Bangla Chalachitra Prachar Sansad has awarded Bhoomi as the BEST BANGLA BAND 2003.
- Bhoomi has been awarded as the LARGEST SELLING album and BEST INLAY design for the album PAAL CHHUTECHHE for the year 2003.
- Bhoomi is the only Bangla Band to have cut GOLD DISCS for the sale of most of their released albums.
- Bhoomi has been awarded the BEST BANGLA BAND of 2004 by Sangeet Utsa Sanman.
- Bhoomi has been awarded the BEST BANGLA BAND by Zee Bangla Sangeet Purashkar 2006.
- Bhoomi has done the music for UNICEF Projects and many television serials and jingles for advertising commercials.
- Bhoomi has composed the cheer song for EURO 2004, that was aired on ESPN and STAR SPORTS.
- Biswa Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sanmelan felicitated Bhoomi for their contribution to Bengali music at Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata.
