Assam has always been known for it’s rich FOLK music. There are many subdivisions within the Folk Songs from Assam. Assamese language is very similar to Bengali Language too. Both Assamese and Benagli Language share near similar letters and alphabets. There are also lots of similarity in folk music of Assam to Bengali Traditional Folk Songs. There are many famous musicians from Assam who made numerous famous Bengali Music Albums. Such as Bhupen Hazarika, Rudra Barua, Jayanta Hazarika, Parbati Prasad, Khagen Mahanta, Samar hazarika, Zubeen Garg and many more.

The Assamese musicians use many different kinds of musical instruments to make their sweet music suc as :

A basic characteristic of the ethnic music of Assam

  1. descending scale which distinguishes it from the raga-based or folk music from the rest of India.
  2. This style is shared by ethnic music of the hill people surrounding the state of Assam, and by the music of Thailand, Myanmar and China.
  3. Furthermore, the tunes are structured in a pyramid, in contrast to the music of rest of India which is meend based.
Assam is a state with valleys and hills, and the home of many ethnic tribes. Just as the geography and varied people co-exist, the pulsating Bihu songs co-exist with languorous music of other forms.
