The great music legend on the 1950’s - 1960’s, O.P. Nayyar is no more. He died in Bombay at the ripe old age of 81 of a cardiac arrest.
With O.P.Nayyar’s passing away, the indian film world has lost a remarkable music talent. O.P.Nayyar’s music evoked images of romance, fun, pathos, courtship, green fields, snow covered mountain tops and of course, a tonga with the debonair hero wooing the snobbish heroine with a melody on his lips, singing to the rhythm of the hoofbeats of his horse!! His music blended western styles with Punjabi folk and had a very distinct sound.
For one who had no training whatsoever in classical music, O.P.Nayyar composed gems like Chain Se Humko Kabhi, Meri Jaan Tumpe Sadke, Raaton Ko Chori Chori, Deewana Hua Baadal, Woh Hanske Mile Humse, Pukarta Chala Hoon Main among many others.
He was instrumental in moulding Asha Bhosle’s voice and he and Asha gave us melodies like Aaiye Meherbaan from Howrah Bridge, Jaaiye Aap Kahan Jaayenge from Mere Sanam, Puchho Na Humen Hum Unke Liye from Mitti Mein Sona.
